Conventions of a Mockumentary

Mockumentary is a type of film in the comedy genre. It is not a typical comedy film as it follows the characters as though it is in fact reality, therefore the characters are aware of the cameras and interact with them.

Typical conventions of a mockumentary are:
  • Written Introduction (text on screen)
  • Character titles on screen
  • Interviews with characters
  • Voice over or Narration ( sometimes by camera crew)
  • Facts and figures displayed on screen (statistics)
  • The camera work is usually obvious on screen.

Examples of mockumentary:
  • Drop Dead Gorgeous
  • Borat
  • Bruno
  • Surfs up
  • This is Spinal Tap
  • Good Hair
This clip is from the mockumentary "Good Hair" it shows the white background that we incorporated in our work which is a typical convention of a mockumentary; we used this when interviewing the character's such as "The scientist" and "Harry Potter" cast.

This clip is part 1 of the film "Surfs up", a mockumentary which begins in the form of an interview where the interviewer is not in the shot but his voice can be heard and characters being interviewed, show full awareness of the interviewer behind the camera.
We have also included this into our opening sequence; as this was not the only mockumentary we saw; the convention being portrayed. E.g the incredibles opening sequence.
